Every January while the rest of the world seems to be getting back to the gym, I instead make resolutions to dive head first into my closet, decluttering and organizing all the things. Its tedious, its time time consuming, but it feels so good to start the year with a little more control and a little less stuff.
CLOSETS and DRESSERS:
I decided this year to tackle two main areas: clothes and toys. Starting with my closet I pulled tons of old items and started making piles: one for donation and one for consignment. I have had great success selling and consigning gently worn items on Postmark versus our local consignment store that normally rolls their eyes at me and offers $8 for the entire box.
Once I cleared out all the clothing items I no longer wanted, I organized what was left by hanging them all on these skinny velvet hangers and placing my clothes in order by color. I have found this is easiest way for me to find what I need in a sea of pants, skirts, and dresses.
Next I moved on to the kid’s clothes. It was a Sunday well spent sorting through bins of old clothes deciding what to keep (for imaginary baby number 5), what to consign, and what to donate. We were recently given this adorable child’s trunk and I decided to use it to store some of Ziggy and Olive’s precious heirloom outfits. The outfits that hold special memories and the ones I hope they will pass down to their babies.
Our house is pretty tiny, so Ziggy and Olive share one dresser and Bear and Liam share another. I have found these drawer dividers are great for sectioning out the drawers even further. I have had these for a few years and have moved them around to different configurations and they work great!
TOYS and GAMES:
This weekend I moved on to toys. I decided last September to get rid of our open shelve concept with the baskets and instead I purchased a vintage armoire on Facebook Marketplace. Two big lovely doors that I can open each day for the kids to reach in and play and then close at night so the mess is out of sight. (And don’t worry, Will has it anchored to the wall very well!) I purchased these white bins to house all the Legos, blocks, cars and trucks and they fit perfectly inside the armoire.
Extra crayons and any toy too tiny for the babies to play with get stored in these little bags in the armoire. They are also great for puzzles that you no longer have the original box because someone used it as a samurai sword that one time.
Here are a few extra items that have been great for helping curb my quest for organization in the new year!
clear bags // vinyl stickers // plastic bins // dresser dividers // recipe box // velvet hangers // petite trunk // bag organizer
