If you remember from last Halloween, my family decided to embrace our “Eras” era for a pre-halloween photo shoot and we all wore different costumes representing our favorite Taylor Swift albums. Out of all the outfits, the one I was most proud of was Olive’s Speak Now dress that I made most of by hand! This project does involve some sewing but I used a simple hack to make this easy for beginners.
If you are here on this page reading this then you probably already know but Taylor Swift debuted this Nicole + Felicia Couture custom dress on the Eras tour last year and it has lovingly been referred to by fans as her “cupcake dress” due to the three tiers cascading down to the floor.
Supplies you will need:
For the dress:
- this purple leotard
- a variety of different purple fabrics that have a good drape such as this, this, and this.
- optional purple tulle
- a hoop petticoat
- optional: glitter fabric spray
For the Coy Fish Guitar:
- a kid size toy guitar
- printable sticker paper
- free printable PDF attached at the bottom of this post
The leotard will be the bodice part of your dress! So you will only need to make the two bottom skirt pieces to be sewn underneath at the waist line and cascade down. Then add the hoop skirt from Amazon to give it the volume!
d i r e c t i o n s:
step one:
Fold fabric in half.
Use the skirt that is attached to your leotard as a guide for how wide to make the waist of your circle pieces.
step two:
Use the leotard skirt as a guide for how wide to make the waist of your circle skirt. Cut a semi circle at the top corner of the fabric.
step three:
Cut the bottom of the skirt along a curved line cutting off, one color longer than the other.
step four:
Cut open the bottom of the leotard open and sew the skirt pieces to the inside of the waist band of the leotard.
In addition to the cupcake dress, Taylor brought out her infamous coy fish guitar on tour for one song only, Long Live. This guitar has been displayed in a museum since she used it during the Speak Now World Tour and fans were elated to see it resurrected for the Eras Tour. So it only made sense that Olive have the cupcake dress AND the coy fish guitar.
Below is the PDF I created and used. Right click and save to your desktop. Print on an 8 x 11 sheet of printable sticker paper making sure you are scaled to 100%. Cut away the access white from the sticker and cut out the “hole” of the guitar and the sticker will fit perfectly on top of this toy guitar! Pro Tip: everyones printers print a little bit differently, so make sure to print some practice runs on regular printer paper and adjust your print scale accordingly prior to printing on your sticker paper
And if sewing isn’t your thing, here are a few other great cupcake dress finds for kids I rounded up:
