Today’s post is nothing heavy. This is not ground breaking research or an earth shattering revelation. But sometimes amidst the chaos it is nice to have something simple and light hearted. So today’s post is simply my collection of doors I have photographed in Charleston that have made me smile. As you may be aware, Charleston is home to a lot of great historical architecture. I shared a post awhile back with some beautiful floors around town, so I decided why not add doors into the mix. Perhaps during this time when traveling is not an option, this will inspire you to put on a mask, get out of your house, and find some beauty in your own home town.
Here are my best and favorite doors in no particular order:
Best Arch Door – 101 Rutledge Avenue – The first time I saw this door it reminded me of The Hobbit meets The South of France. My sister took this photo when we were on a walk. Bear was only 3 months old and was really starting to smile those sweet baby smiles, so this door holds a warm spot in my heart because of this memory. Best All Around -14 Tradd Street- This blue color, the flower knocker, and the vintage mailbox slot! I love it all! One day we were talking past and I was talking about this door and the owners were coming back from walking their dog, I was mortified that they overheard me (luckily I was only saying good things) but they smiled and waited until we were done with our gawking as if they were used to people stopping outside of their cute door. That is such a good testimate of Charleston hospitality. Most Instagrammable Door – 126 Tradd Street – Pink is not my go to choice, but you would be hard pressed to see a Charleston home tour without a look at the infamous pink door on Tradd Street. Also this is the first, but not the last lion knocker you will see on my list. Best Jasmine Arch Above a Blue Door – 0 Tradd Street – Beautiful jasmine grows above this door in the spring time but this blue door gets visitors year round. Perhaps because it sit on the corner of Tradd and East Bay streets and is the first house on start of the infamous “Rainbow Row.” Best Jasmine Arch Above a White Door – 55 Church Street- Will likes to tell me every time we walk past this door that the owners probably have a problem with bugs and pests in the house because of this door. My response is always: totally worth it. Best Rainbow Row door – 107 East Bay Street – This would be a good point to let you know some rules of door-loving. Be a respectful tourist. Do not disturb the owners, do not stand on their welcome mat or someone’s stoop (as seen above), do not climb the steps, and generally do not touch the house. I am breaking 2 out of 4 of these rules here. I was pretty sure no one was home this time of year but still you should do as I say not as I do. This was a few years ago and I have since changed my ways. Best Team Spirit -1 Legare Street – I have always loved this door because I am a sucker for a fun knocker, but last week we spotted this sign and it made me laugh. If we are not going to have the Olympics this year, at least we can beat the Corona virus?? Ha. I don’t know. Either way, I applaud the optimism. Best Christmas Decor – 47 East Bay Street – Every year at Christmas time, this house has the best garland made of real magnolia leaves draped over the door. It’s crazy to think that Christmas was only 7 months ago but alas it was. A lot has happened since then. And also not much has happened at the same exact time. Biggest Door – Dock Street Theater Queen Street – This door is actually the side/back door of the historic Dock Street Theater. They use this door to load and unload set decor and once we were on a walk and they were bringing in the set decorations for Little Shop of Horrors . I found this incredibly entertaining and sang “feed me Seymour” for the rest of the day. Honorable Mentions:
-40 Tradd Street- – somewhere on Chambers Street – – 26 Queen Street – This was taken in 2012. My bridal portrait session wearing my reception dress. Hopefully the boys and my camera can get back out there and find some more beautiful doors to photograph and to help you all fall more in love with Charleston. And someday when Corona Virus has decided to bid farewell, we hope to see you touring our city with us. Until then, stay safe! xx
Loved this post!! Thank you!
