So here is the true story of why we all went as Peter Pan for Halloween. I saw a blue dress online last July and thought to myself “wow that is really cute!” but when it arrived in the mail, the sleeves were deemed too poofy to wear in real life. The dress was voted off the island but I still loved it. It was then that I realized it would work as a costume. I dabbled with the idea of Alice and Wonderland or Dorthy from the Wizard of Oz, but ultimately landed on Wendy from Peter Pan for Halloween. So now it was time to convince my family to be on board. By August I started planting the seeds of how awesome Peter Pan and Captain Hook are. I brought it up in conversation at least once a week and we watched various movie versions of Peter Pan. So when it came time for Halloween, my family instantly knew what we should all dress up as. Subliminally I brainwashed them into wanting to go as these characters simply so I could wear this blue dress. And that is how you win Halloween.
So my dress was taken care of. Now time to work on the others. I know the title of this post is DIY but the truth is, only half these costumes are DIY. With six members in our family, doing anything 50% is still a win in my book. So while Peter Pan, Captain Hook, and Tick Tock the Crocodile were all bought from second hand costume shops, I will share how I created Wendy, Tinkerbell, and Smee’s costumes all from scratch,
For Wendy all you need is a blue dress, any black flats, and a velvet ribbon for your belt and for your hair. I found some great ribbon on Etsy that was in a beautiful antique French blue color for only $3.50 for 5 yards which was more than enough. The dress was from H&M (and is unfortunately sold out) and the shoes were old Tory Burch I already had in my closet.
Smee was really easy for Will. Any old flip flops will do, plus cozy navy pajama shorts or workout shorts. Then paired with a specific blue and white stripe tee which Amazon has because they have everything. We used a piece fold red scar to make the pirate cap and he was done!
I spent the most time and energy on Tinkerbell because didn’t like the look of any of the premade outfits. Also since Olive was not yet walking at this point, a dress didn’t make as much sense. So instead I went on Etsy and found the sweetest leotard in the perfect shade of green. Etsy also made the wings. The shoes were harder to find so I bought a cheap pair on amazon, painted them green, and hot glue’d a pompom to the front of each!
