After years of talking about it, we finally decided to make the short drive up the coast to Brookgreen Gardens. And the thing that finally give us the push: dinosaurs. We found out through some friends that Brookgreen was hosting a temporary dinosaur exhibit featuring robotic “life size” dinosaurs. We hyped it to up to Liam and he got so excited that he talked about it the entire drive down there, only to be terrified when we walked into the exhibit. He also proceeded to ask us when will we “go ride the train” which was really the free shuttle that takes you from one part of the garden to the zoo area. Turns out the shuttle ride was his favorite part! Hopefully he will look back on this video one day and see his two year old self in this mini Jurassic Park experience.
Besides the dinosaur exhibit, we were able to tour the entire gardens and even have lunch in the pavilion. The Japanese maples were in bloom, the Spanish moss was perfectly hanging from the avenue of oak trees, and each statue was more impressive than the next.
The drive from Charleston took just around 2 hours, we ended up arriving around 11am, and stayed for a total of 5 hours. But you could easily spend an entire weekend there. The price to get into the park was a little steep ($18 per adult, free for Liam) but the passes are good for six consecutive days. The park also has fun rotating exhibits and events such as the summer lights festival and a summer concert series.
