I love a good birthday party! And this weekend was no exception. Saturday Will and I had the pleasure of hanging out with two of my favorite little rug rats, Nick and Vivienne, at Vivienne’s first birthday party. Vivienne is the spunky little 12 month old daughter of our friends Jon and Nicole. She loves the beach and anything with water (including playing in the rain); she has recently begun walking which made it nearly impossible to get a photo of her without her moving; and she has the most adorable head of blonde curls!
So for every cute little toddler out there, there should be a cute little outfit to go with them! So for that I give you the Best Friends Pillowcase Dress. This pattern was created by my good friend Brooke of Debbie Brooke Designs. It is only the second ever children’s pattern that I have done, with the Fabiana Peplum being my first. Once I was able to get my measurements and cut out my fabric pieces, the construction part was a breeze! I wanted to make the dress a little longer so that Vivienne could “grow” into this dress. And with the bow tie on the top of the bodice, you can adjust how you tie it on to make it smaller or wider arm hole and neck hole so hopefully this will be a little outfit she can wear for the next year or so!
The fabric I choose is from the Wee Wander collection by Sarah Jane for Micheal Miller. I went with the “Tree Lights” for the bodice and the “Summer Night Lights” for the band piece. This fabric is so adorable and it reminded me of when I was a little girl in the upstate of South Carolina. We had fireflies each summer and we would love to catch them in jars and then release them back into the sky. Sigh..memories. All the fabric and notions were purchased at Five Eighth Seams in Charleston. They have the BEST collections of children’s fabric that I could make this dress a hundred times and still find fabric I want to use for a little girl’s dress. The tricky part about this fabric is that the print design in the Summer Nights Lights fabric does not run in the same direction as you would normally cut fabric. So I had to be a little tricky when I cut my fabric and even though I was still able to do two regular side seams as the pattern called for, I was not able to do a fold over band, or else my little children on the print would of been upside down or you would not of been able to see their pretty faces. So instead I just folded under 1/2 in and hemmed the bottom of the band. Also, the pattern’s finished dimensions called for a 4.75 in band but since the pattern with the children was a bit longer, I went with a 6 in band which lengthened the band and shortened the bodice. But definitely worth it! I mean, just look at that print!

Like I said, the pictures aren’t great but little Vivi was having the time of her live moving like crazy! So glad I had the opportunity to test this new pattern. This a great pattern for anyone looking to make a quick gift for the little girls in your life! See you next time! xxoo Priscilla
