Slinky dog from Toy Story might just be our best Halloween costume yet. It’s funny, it’s cute, and it was actually very easy and inexpensive to put together. Getting the twins to walk together in the same direction might be another story! I am thinking it will be part fiasco and part good times! But at least we will have a good laugh trying.
To create this costume you can easily just purchase two pre-made dog costumes. However I found most of the premade dog costumes look more like labradors or golden retrievers. Slinky Dog is actually a brown maple color Daschund and in an effort to be as realistic as possible, I decided to create the costumes from scratch.
Here’s how you can do it too:

Supplies Needed:
- two Sherpa suits or any fluffy brown suit. These two piece fleece suits are also an option.
- puppy ears and a tail
- a jumbo size plastic slinky
- two sets of dark brown pajamas
- scissors
- gray or silver pray paint
- green turtle neck
- safety pins
- optional: mascara or black paint for the nose

Instructions:
1. Spread out and spray paint your slinky, giving it a day outside to dry. The slinky will be very long so you can cut off any desired amount before spraying.
2. Cut the arms and legs off the sherpa/fleece suit. I then followed behind with my sewing machines and finished off my seams but if you don’t have a sewing machine you can leave the raw edges.
3. Hand sew or hot glue the tail to the back of one of the sherpa suits.
4. Cut a small slit IN FRONT of the suit that has the tail, about where the belly button would be, This is where you will insert one end of the slinky. The other suit (the one WITHOUT the tail) will then get a slit cut right at the same level but on the backside of the suit.

Get your kids dressed in the pajamas and suit first and then feed in the slinky and attach with a safety pin if needed, although we did a practice run without the pins and the slinky stayed in place, I just fed a few turns of the slinky inside. Whoever is in the front will also have a green turtle neck and that will be Slink’s “collar.” I cut just the neck part off of an old turtle neck (not pictured here) but you could also get a green turtle neck onesie and layer it under the pajamas.
And that’s it!

I have had so many people ask me “how did you decide who walked in front vs in the back” and honestly it was a game time decision. You know your kids though and whichever twin is more of a leader or might more inclined to nudge the other one along might want to go in front. For us, Olive was the one who tolerated wearing the doggie ear headband, so she won the front spot that day, but Ziggy was just as happy being in the back and part of the Halloween fun!
