I don’t know if it was my recent birthday, the birth of the twins, or Liam starting kindergarten, but lately I have been very aware that life is moving much faster now than it ever has in my lifetime.
As a child I can keenly remember thinking my childhood would live on for eternity. I felt like I had always been a child (because naturally that was true) but that I would forever remain a child because the notion of adulthood felt out of my reach and not even remotely in my near future.
In my twenties I felt even less disconnected with “the end of my days” as I was young, wild, carefree and loving every minute of it. I could count on only one hand the number of people I knew who had passed away and they were all “old people.” Being old was something for Future Priscilla to worry about and I could continue to not wear sunscreen, over-pluck my eyebrows, and make other seemingly irrational choices.
But now I am 39. The grays in my hair, the sunspots on my chest, and the bags around my eyes tell the story of someone who is not only in adulthood but who has been here for sometime now.
I know it is cliche but my eyes are now really open to just how short life is. How it is an honor and a privilege to have made it 39 years and I hope I can continue at least another 39 years on this earth. So I am trying to be thankful for every day I am given. To take more long walks with my family. To love a little more, laugh more often, give back when I can, and cuddle the babies just a little bit longer. Read all the books, order the lobster, and wear all the pretty heels. Always wear the heels. Even on a random Tuesday at the park if it makes me feel good. And it usually does.
